Nairobi, Kenya: Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has announced a Sh20 million facelift for the dilapidated City Mortuary.

He also pledged to construct an ultra-modern mortuary complex to be situated outside the city centre, set to cost close to Sh50 million.

Dr Kidero expressed concern that the mortuary makes about Sh30 million a year yet the county spends about Sh300 million in running its operations.

“I will make sure that we have another ultra-modern mortuary fitted with modern facilities and all the work procedures are comprehensively risk-assessed to ensure that health, safety and environmental standards are maintained at all times,” assured Kidero.

The governor, who paid an impromptu visit to the facility, came face-to-face with the sorry state of the institution, which has worsened over time. He noted that the tour of the Nairobi City Mortuary was meant to assess the situation and explained that the facility would undergo a major rehabilitation as he explores other options.
