Armed gangsters raided Voi senior resident magistrate Linas Nyakundi’s home and robbed him of cash and other valuables worth more than Sh162,000.

And in Mombasa, a man police claim tried to attack security men on patrol was shot dead on Wednesday. Mombasa Deputy OCPD Muturi Mbogo said yesterday that a group of men armed with machetes accosted officers on guard.

He said investigations revealed a vehicle had been vandalised 15 minutes before the attack on the officers. “The 4.15am incident took place at Digo Road Mombasa where armed gangsters whom we suspected had vandalised a motor vehicle attempted to attack police officers who were on patrol.

But in defense, the officers shot at them killing one and injuring another on the leg. The other five managed to flee,” said Mbogo. He said police suspect the thugs could have robbed a vehicle near Salambo area 15 minutes before they accosted the officers.

A side mirror with registration number KBJ 914 and a panga (machete) were recovered from the suspects. Meanwhile, the magistrate Mr Nyakundi and his housekeeper were robbed on Wednesday.

Police said the four-member gang armed with crude weapons struck at the residence near Public Works offices in the outskirts of Voi town and committed the robbery.

The criminals used boulders to break into the main door and stole money, mobile phones and electronic equipment. The magistrate and his housekeeper cowered under the bed as the gangsters swept through the house.

“The shaken magistrate and his houseboy told us they saw the gangsters and hid under the bed. They did not raise alarm for fear of their lives,” said a police officer investigating the incident.

The officer said the gang ransacked the magistrate’s belongings including laptops, television sets and mobile phones and fled the scene immediately. The police said the two had recorded statements and investigations into the incident launched.
