More than 100,000 livestock in Naivasha District have been vaccinated against the dreaded Rift Valley Fever.
During a two-week exercise funded by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), 108,000 sheep and goats were inoculated.
According to Naivasha district veterinary officer Dr Peterson Njiru, the exercise was fruitful and surpassed the 80,000 target.
Njiru said co-operation from livestock owners had helped the situation. “The exercise was well co-ordinated and we managed to cover all the intended parts of Naivasha District which is always a high risk area,” he said.
Speaking in his office, Njiru said that plans were underway to vaccinate cattle in the vast district against the fever. “At the moment we do not have funds to vaccinate cattle but we are working on this in the coming months,” he said.
