Hubert Nakitare a.k.a Nonini is leading in a list of artistes who will be receiving a cheque of six-digit figures as the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) releases its first quarter royalty distribution today, MondayBlues has exclusively learned.
Maji Maji-owned Ivory Music, Charles Kanyi a.k.a Jaguar, Angela Chibalonza and Kevin Wyre are the other major beneficiaries, in that order.
Others in the top 10 list are Hellen Maloney a.k.a Habida, Sound Africa (David Makali), Pamela Otieno, David Mathenge a.k.a Nameless and Alex Apoko aka Ringtone.
The quarterly distribution is for July to September 2012 and relates to collections from artistes’ performances in public places. ?
“We use log sheets obtained from radio and television stations to make these distributions and also use statistics obtained from sales of music,” the MCSK CEO Maurice Okoth told MondayBlues during an exclusive interview.
“We are extremely elated at the results because we have artistes earning six figure royalties for a quarter period. This shows by the end of the year we could have artistes earning millions of shillings in royalties. The amounts earned in this quarter eclipse the highest earned in the whole of the last financial year,” he added.?
The next distribution will be from royalties collected from television and radio stations and will be done at the end of February.
“We are asking all our members to open an account with Kenya Commercial Bank which was appointed to make payments of all royalties for MCSK members,” Okoth concluded.
