President Kibaki has assured Kenyans that no region of the country will be allowed to secede adding Kenya has been and will continue to be one national entity.
“We should stop misleading wananchi that there is room for secession of any part of our nation,” he stated. Without mentioning names of regions that want to secede, Kibaki said the Constitution clearly states that Kenya is one unitary State.
“We must therefore say no to those persons who seek to divide our country into tribal and regional bastions,” he explained.
He added that the next elections are an opportunity for Kenyans to elect persons who will be faithful to the Constitution.
In the recent past, the Mombasa Republic Council (MRC) has been in the headlines for wanting to secede from Kenya.
Ultra-modern library
The MRC say they want to secede and create a country based at the Coast Province claiming that successive governments have not done much to alleviate poverty at the coast. The President made the remarks at Adventist University of Africa in Kajiado County during the official opening of an ultra-modern library at the institution.
Also present were Cabinet ministers George Saitoti (Internal Security), Margaret Kamar (Higher Education) and Sam Ongeri (Foreign Affairs).
United Democratic Forum (UDF) and ODM have filed Motions in Parliament seeking the establishment of a parliamentary select committee to redress historical injustices.
Meanwhile, the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) now says it will not hold meetings with any politician.
On Monday, MRC spokesman Rashid Mraja accused Ikolomani MP, Boni Khalwale of misrepresenting its demands.
“We take great exception to Khalwale’s statement. It was meant to divide MRC supporters who have been seeking justice in court. MRC is a strong movement and nobody will break it up,” Mraja said referring to the MP’s statements after meeting MRC members in Kwale last week.
On Friday Khalwale, sensationally claimed at Moi Airport in Mombasa that he had secured key concessions in secret talks with MRC founder Omar Mwamnwazi.
