For brides looking for unique wedding gowns abroad, this South African wedding extravaganza is the place to be writes, NALIAKA WAFULA

Twice a year for the last ten years, anyone who has anything to do with weddings takes part in the Wedding Expo, a South African bridal event that brings together service vendors, designers and even law firms offering pre-nuptial agreement services under one buzzing roof.

This month, it took place at the Coca-Cola dome in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The mood is always festive and the couples wide-eyed and curious because there is so much to take in. Wedding Expo Director, Amanda Cunningham, tells me they offer a prize for the best stand and it seems the competition is fierce.

So fierce that one of the stands I visit has real life models to showcase wedding dresses.

Further afield is a top of the range limousine that is basically an after-party venue on wheels.

"What I enjoy most is the creativity, seeing the growth of exhibitors I have been with for ten years," says Amanda.

To add to the glamour and wonderland quality are the breathtaking fashion shows featuring ready to wear and couture gowns with top designers like New Romantics, Shifting Sands, Biji, and Maggie Sottero.

It is the ‘must do’ event for South African brides where, as Amanda puts it, they can "get ideas, see what’s out there and meet the experts".
