Most hair dressers are well trained in hygiene in the salon, apart from a few that may be careless, but it is the duty of a client to also ensure that the equipment used on your hair are clean and sanitised. Here are important equipment that should be always clean.
Towels
Towels are very sensitive since they are in contact with the skin, face and the arms. Every time a towel is put on you as a client it has to be dry, clean and smelling nice since you may even use it on your face in case there is overflow of product. It should never be used on the next person if not washed by hand or machine.
Shower Cap
Shower caps should always be clean and never repeated on clients because of the elastic on them. I prefer new shower caps every time.
Sink
Since this is where all hair dirt is taken it should be clean and disinfected after every client visits especially clients with contagious infections on the scalp and skin.
Drier
Dirty driers leads to running nose that does not end. It should be clean to remove dust in the fan at least every six weeks.
Shaving Machine
If the salon does not keep the machine in the steriliser that should not worry you. If it is put in a clean, closed place then disinfected before and after every use then that is okay.
Combs
Combs should always be clean and not shared among the stylist and if it has to, then they should clean often. Always ask your stylist if you have doubt with the combs.
Rollers
Rollers are as sensitive as the towels and should be clean. In case you see your hair rollers looking brown and oily, ask your stylist to clean them.
Blowdry
A blow dryer should be clean on its comb and the place that release air to have clean air in the blow-dry.
MYTHS FOR SALON EQUIPMENT
• The stylist doesn’t clean the combs
• Salons are cleaned once a year
• Salons don’t care for good ventilation.
• All salons repeat towels the next day.
• Towels should always be washed by machine.
• Never use a shaver in salon.
• All driers in the salon are dirty and that’s why they’re hotter than home dryers.
