Continental private sports broadcaster, SuperSport, has secured exclusive pay television rights to broadcast the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals, live across sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa.

A press release from MultiChoice Kenya, the local franchise holders for DStv, said its subscribers in 40 countries would witness the global football extravaganza staged in Africa for the first time.

"Given the African interest in the event, SuperSport International CEO Imtiaz Patel was delighted when announcing the deal, saying it was in keeping with its legacy of continually bringing viewers across the continent major international sports programming," the statement read.

"Fifa’s approach has always been to ensure images of our events will be seen by the widest possible audience. We are therefore pleased to work with such an experienced partner in extending frontiers of football coverage across African countries supplementary to the provided free TV coverage in the region," the release quoted Fifa’s secretary general JÈrome Valcke saying.

The World Cup will run from June 11 to July 11 with 32 nations, including for the first time six African teams (hosts S Africa qualified automatically), contesting 64 matches.
