In the last few weeks I have received numerous questions related to chemically processed hair. How best to apply chemicals to virgin hair; if it is okay to relax hair at a tender age; how frequently one should retouch their hair and how best to care for chemically processed hair among many others. Here are tips that will help you achieve that desired look and erase your fears.

1. Wash processed hair at least every week — but you do not necessarily have to treat it — condition it and style it.

2. For a bouncy feel, ensure that your hair is dry before styling.

3. It is advisable to trim your hair after every three months — or with every retouch.

4. Before neutralising, ensure that the entire chemical is washed completely out of your hair and scalp.

5. Use a neutralising shampoo (preferably of the same brand as the chemical) and not just any shampoo. Do not over wash or over neutralise your hair. Three shampoo applications accompanied by thorough rinsing should be sufficient.

6. Always follow the manufacturer’s instruction while washing off chemical from your hair.

7. Don’t mix two different brands of chemicals to process your hair.

8. Even if you hair is coarse, do not let chemical stay on the head for more than 12 minutes. Even though it might not damage your hair, it could damage your scalp.

9. Remember no lye chemicals are preferable because they are mild on the scalp.

10. Be careful when using lye products because they irritate the scalp faster. Do not apply these to close to the scalp.

11. Treat your hair after every chemical process.

Remember healthy beginning lay the foundation for healthy hair.
