Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula have led a delegation of lawmakers in visiting Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga at his Nairobi residence as he continues recovering from an illness.
The Wednesday, November 4 visit brought together legislators from both Houses of Parliament, who paid a courtesy call on the Siaya Senator following his recent hospitalisation.
In a statement after the meeting, Wetang’ula said the delegation was encouraged by Oburu’s recovery, adding that he remained engaged in parliamentary affairs despite being away from the Senate.
“Senator Oburu Oginga has been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at his residence. He has not absconded from his parliamentary duties, he is working from home,” Wetang’ula said.
Oburu was discharged from Nairobi Hospital on October 19 after being admitted on October 2.
Wetang’ula said the ODM leader appeared cheerful during their meeting and kept the visiting legislators entertained with his characteristic humour.
“True to his jovial nature, Hon. Oburu kept us entertained with his usual jokes and humour. He expressed confidence that he would soon return to active duty even as he acknowledged that his illness had temporarily slowed him down politically,” he added.
The National Assembly Speaker said he had encouraged Oburu to prioritise his health and allow himself enough time to recover before resuming his political engagements.
Oburu also expressed gratitude to the parliamentary leadership for visiting him, saying their discussions extended beyond personal matters to issues concerning the country's future.
He highlighted the need for national unity, peace and cohesion, calling on political leaders to embrace dialogue and political tolerance despite their differences.
“True leadership demands continuously seeking common ground, fostering political tolerance, and putting the interests of Kenya first. Dialogue remains our most potent tool for national healing and progress,” he said.
The visit comes as Oburu recuperates while continuing to shoulder his responsibilities as ODM party leader and Siaya Senator
