The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has welcomed newly acquired MD500 helicopters from South Korea in a ceremonial water salute, marking a fresh addition to the country’s military aviation fleet.
Images shared by KDF on their X official page shows the helicopters being received at an airfield, with a fire engine spraying a powerful arc of water over the aircraft as one of them hovers nearby.
The water salute, a ceremonial tradition used to mark special aviation occasions, offered a striking welcome for the helicopters as they arrived in Kenya.
The acquisition is expected to add to the KDF’s aviation capabilities, with helicopters playing an important role in military operations, surveillance, reconnaissance, training and other support missions.
MD500 helicopters are light, compact aircraft known for their manoeuvrability and ability to operate in a range of environments.
Their design makes them suitable for missions that require agility and access to areas where larger aircraft may face operational limitations.
The aircraft are part of a family of helicopters developed by US manufacturer Hughes Helicopters, whose designs are now associated with MD Helicopters.
Their arrival comes as military forces continue to rely on rotary-wing aircraft for operational flexibility, particularly in situations requiring rapid movement, aerial observation and support for personnel on the ground.
The ceremony also highlighted the importance of military aviation in strengthening national defence and improving the range of capabilities available to the armed forces.
The KDF’s official confirmation of the delivery and further technical details would help establish the full scope of the acquisition.
