Kenyan skater Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu has appealed for financial support as he prepares to represent the country at the World Skate Games 2026 in Paraguay.
Kiarie says he has already registered for the global competition but risks missing the event due to insufficient funds for travel and other expenses.
“I have missed three international skating competitions because of lack of funding,” Kiarie said. “I am afraid I might not receive the necessary funding for my trip to the World Skate Games in Paraguay.”
The appeal comes months after the talented athlete represented Kenya at the International Skating Challenge in Cotonou, Benin, where he competed as the country’s only representative.

Despite travelling with limited support, Kiarie delivered an impressive performance, winning a gold medal in freestyle battle and a silver medal in classic slalom.
His performance earned praise from Kenyans online, with members of the public later raising more than KSh137,000 through contributions to support him.
Kiarie’s experience has also highlighted the challenges faced by athletes in less recognised sports. Unlike major disciplines such as football and athletics, skating often receives limited sponsorship, coaching support and government funding.
Reports indicated that Kiarie travelled to Benin without a coach, federation officials or major sponsors.
The Kenyan skater is now appealing to individuals, companies and sports leaders to help finance his trip to Paraguay.
He believes competing at the World Skate Games would provide another opportunity to showcase his talent, fly the Kenyan flag and inspire more young people to take up skating.
Having already demonstrated his ability to compete at a high level, Kiarie hopes the support he receives will help him take Kenya’s growing skating talent to the global stage.
