A mother and her daughter have been arrested over allegations of orchestrating a multi-million-shilling land fraud scheme involving family property in Karatina, Nyeri County.

Mary Muthoni Njuguna and her daughter, Veronica Wambui Ng’ang’a, were arrested on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following investigations into the alleged fraudulent transfer of family land valued at approximately Sh40 million.

The investigation was triggered by a complaint filed by a family member on behalf of his siblings.

The complainant alleged that the two suspects had fraudulently transferred several valuable parcels of family land into their names and those of companies associated with them.

Investigators established that the alleged transfers were carried out secretly between 2020 and 2023, allegedly excluding other family members from the transactions.

“Through meticulous investigations, it was uncovered that the suspects executed secret transfers from 2020 to 2023,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a post on X, adding that the transactions deliberately excluded other family members.

After completing their investigations, authorities submitted the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review.

The ODPP subsequently directed that the suspects be charged with conspiracy to defraud and fraudulent procurement of title.

The mother and daughter are expected to be arraigned at the Karatina Law Courts on Wednesday, August 19.

The allegations centre on the ownership and transfer of family property, with investigators estimating the value of the disputed parcels at Sh40 million.

The two suspects will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations in court.

The charges remain allegations until proved in a court of law.
