Anita Among: Uganda Speaker's designer outfit among KSh150m assets impounded

Police have seized, among other assets, a designer outfit belonging to Uganda’s Speaker Anita Among in a dramatic anti-corruption operation.

Anita had previously turned heads at President Yoweri Museveni’s inauguration in the pastel yellow Oscar de la Renta ensemble valued at more than KSh1.4 million ($10,800).

The outfit featured a Porcelain Flower Embroidered Dress paired with a matching cropped jacket.

According to Oscar de la Renta pricing, the dress is valued at about KSh880,000 ($6,800), while the jacket costs approximately KSh676,000 ($5,200), bringing the total to over KSh1.4 million before accessories.

Days after the appearance, the same outfit was linked to an ongoing investigation.

Authorities confirmed the dress and jacket were among items seized during coordinated raids tied to allegations of illicit enrichment, money laundering and abuse of office.

The operation added a symbolic twist to an already high-profile probe into luxury assets linked to the former Speaker.

The crackdown was led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), supported by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and intelligence units. Officers raided multiple properties belonging to Among in Kigo, Ntinda and Nakasero, cordoning off entire compounds as search teams moved in.

During the operation, investigators also confiscated a 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan valued at about UGx1.8 billion, roughly KSh64 million ($500,000).

The vehicle was loaded onto a police flatbed and taken to Naguru Police Headquarters under escort.

Several other luxury vehicles were also removed from her Nakasero residence, including a black Range Rover Autobiography valued at about KSh35 million ($270,000), a white Toyota Land Cruiser V8 worth around KSh18 million ($140,000), a Lexus LX 600 valued at roughly KSh30 million ($232,000), and another Toyota Land Cruiser reportedly linked to her official fleet.

The vehicles were towed away under heavy security.

Investigators additionally seized electronic devices, including mobile phones and computers, believed to contain financial records relevant to the probe. Forensic teams spent hours documenting and cataloguing items from the properties.

The operation was later extended to Parliament, where offices linked to Among and other senior officials were sealed off as crime scenes.

Detectives collected documents and digital records tied to procurement and financial management processes.

The developments come amid rising political pressure on the former Speaker, who has withdrawn from the race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, citing internal National Resistance Movement (NRM) party unity and pledging cooperation with investigators.

The case has triggered intense debate in Uganda, with supporters describing the crackdown as a firm anti-corruption step, while critics argue it reflects deeper political tensions.
