Botched fireworks burn down family house in Gitaru

A family in Gitaru, Kiambu County, began 2026 in devastation after their three-bedroom house was reduced to ashes during New Year’s celebrations.

The fire, which occurred on January 1, is being linked to fireworks mishandling.

Area chief James Gitau confirmed the incident and urged stronger controls on fireworks.

“I would even recommend their removal from shelves altogether to prevent future occurrences, especially with children prone to mishandling them,” he said.

According to eyewitnesses, children were playing with the fireworks when a spark, possibly from a match or stray ember, landed on flammable materials near a table inside the home, igniting the blaze.

Flames spread rapidly, engulfing the house before firefighters could arrive.

Residents attempted to control the fire using buckets of water, but the intensity proved too great.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported. However, the family lost all their possessions.

Homeowner accounts describe rushing back into thick, black smoke in a desperate attempt to salvage items, only to be overwhelmed by the fire.

Kiambu County officials are now investigating the incident, with calls for safety perimeters and age restrictions on fireworks sales.

While no arrests have been made, community leaders emphasised the importance of parental supervision during festive seasons.

Neighbours have rallied to support the displaced family, helping them cope with the loss of furniture, clothing, and other essentials.
