Residents living around Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital who have been complaining of a bad smell emanating from the facility's morgue could soon breathe fresh air as plans to renovate the facility are in high gear.
The newly appointed Chief Officer for Health Facilities, Geoffrey Mosiria Omatoke, said his plan is to find alternative means of preservation as the cooling machines at Mama Lucy Hospital are not properly maintained.
The health expert explained his department's plans when he was being vetted for the position before being given a green light by the County Assembly.
"The mortuary has some coolers but they are not properly maintained. But we can introduce embalming of bodies," Omatoke proposed in his response to the Committee.
On poor service delivery at City Mortuary which is worsened by financial constraints to the facility, Omatoke said the best option is to utilise money collected from the facility to improve it.
Maurice Ochieng, Chairman of the Health Committee at the Assembly, challenged Omatoke to state how he will improve health services for the city residents.
"We have some ICU machines that were donated and others acquired by the county but they have not been used due to lack of space or personnel in some facilities. Therefore my priority will be to ensure that they are operational," he said.
He added that his role will extend to equipping some hospitals that not only lack basic operating equipment, but also medical facilities in Kibera and Mukuru slums that were recently constructed.
