A 22-year-old man is set to be arraigned later in the day, for allegedly impersonating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says.
The suspect, Collins Kipleting Serem alias Rengstar, is a benga music artist based in Kamplemur village in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect created a fake Facebook account using the Deputy President’s identity.
According to a tweet by the DCI, Serem is accused of using the said account to solicit for funds from unsuspecting Kenyans, claiming it would be used to address hunger issues in the country.
“[He] was arrested after he created a fake Facebook account bearing the Deputy President’s name and obtained money from unsuspecting netizens, allegedly meant for feeding Kenyans facing hunger,” DCI has tweeted.
“Sleuths attached to the Deputy President’s office launched a manhunt for the suspect and arrested him in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu county,”
The suspect is currently being processed for arraignment.
