Moi Teaching and referral Hospital (MTRH) Eldoret has received Sh40 million worth of operating theatre equipment and supplies from a United States university.

Duke University in North Carolina donated surgery and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities to boost medical services in the largest referral hospital in western Kenya.

This was disclosed on Monday when a team of 17 surgeons from Duke University led by Prof Michael Haglund started a five-day medical camp for complicated brain tumor and spinal disease patients in Eldoret.

Associate Professor of Anesthesia, John Keiter, Stephen Parker, Betsy Hughes from Duke University and Dr Florentius Koech of MTRH are among the senior surgeons who will take part in the operations that end on Friday.

Dr Wilson Aruasa, the MTRH acting Director said 25 patients with complicated brain and spine diseases have already been admitted in surgical wards and will benefit from the subsidised operations. "One of the patients from a cattle rustling-prone area with an arrow in his brain tissue is among those who will benefit."
