With fitness and healthy living gaining popularity, several Kenyan politicians have also embraced healthier lifestyles and undergone notable weight-loss transformations.

From changing their diets and cutting down on alcohol to committing to regular workouts, these leaders have publicly shared their journeys and the lifestyle changes that helped them shed excess weight.

President William Ruto

President William Ruto has previously addressed public curiosity over his noticeable weight loss, attributing the change to a deliberate decision to adopt a healthier lifestyle after the demands of the 2022 presidential campaign disrupted his routine.

Speaking during a joint live broadcast from State House in May 2023, Ruto said the intense pressure of the campaign had affected his eating and exercise habits. Irregular schedules, unpredictable meal times and high stress levels often led him to overeat while leaving little time for exercise.

After assuming office, he said he decided to lose the extra weight to remain fit and better manage the demands of the presidency.

“I had an original fit that ran the last one and a half to two years. We went into elections, and you know when you have elections there is a lot of pressure; sometimes you take out the pressure on food," he said.

"You have to do this and that, and you don’t have time to go and exercise, and sometimes you eat. Because you don’t know when you will get the next meal, sometimes you overeat. I decided to cut it down because my friend ile kibarua niko nayo si kidogo. So, you need to be alert for things to happen as planned,” Ruto added.

Johnson Sakaja

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has also undergone a visible weight-loss transformation, which he has attributed to changes in his diet and a disciplined exercise routine.

Sakaja has previously spoken about reducing his intake of carbohydrates and controlling his portions while incorporating healthier foods into his meals.

He also highlighted cutting down on alcohol, noting that drinks can contribute significantly to calorie intake.

The governor said he maintains his fitness routine even while travelling for official engagements, making regular gym sessions part of his lifestyle.

“Diet ni muhimu, just reduce the quantities na carbohydrates mingi, add healthy foods halafu kuchapa tizi. Adui sio nyama ni pombe, that’s what adds calories mingi sana, kama lazima unywe unapunguza tu. Afya ni muhimu,” Sakaja said.

Cleophas Malala

Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala underwent a major transformation after his weight peaked at 138 kilogrammes.

Malala has previously revealed that his weight became a serious concern during an 18-hour flight to the United States, when he developed severe back pain and eventually required hospital treatment.

Following medical advice to lose weight, he embarked on a strict 90-day liquid diet before transitioning to a cleaner, more sustainable eating plan.

He combined controlled portions with intensive physical exercise, helping him lose more than 17 kilogrammes and maintain his target weight.

Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir is another politician who has publicly documented a dramatic physical transformation.

Nassir shed more than 40 kilogrammes after his weight reached about 130 kilogrammes.

His transformation brought his weight down to below 87 kilogrammes and reduced his waistline from 44 inches to 34 inches.

Speaking to the Standard, Nassir said his turning point came during a trip to Dubai, where he was unable to take part in a skydiving activity because he exceeded the weight limit.

The experience motivated him to make significant lifestyle changes. Rather than opting for surgery, Nassir committed to daily morning strength and cardio workouts alongside a healthier diet.

He has also spoken about starting his mornings with nutritious meals such as overnight-soaked dates and oatmeal.

Millicent Omanga

Politician and businesswoman Millicent Omanga recently shared one of the most striking weight-loss transformations among Kenyan political figures.

In May 2026, Omanga revealed that she had lost 45 kilogrammes over three years, moving from 130 kilogrammes to 85 kilogrammes.

Sharing a side-by-side comparison on Instagram, Omanga said she had not fully appreciated the extent of her transformation until she saw the two photographs together.

“I genuinely thought people were joking about my weight loss until I saw these two pictures together, 130kg → 85kg. Same human. 3 years difference,” she wrote.

Their journeys differ in approach, but the politicians have highlighted several common factors, including regular exercise, dietary changes, portion control and, in some cases, reducing alcohol intake.
