A Kenyan mum has left netizens in stitches after giving an unexpected twist to the “bag ni ya nini?” trend that has taken social media by storm.
In a video shared by Nairobi Juice, a woman is heard coaching another woman on how to respond to the now-famous question, “Bag ni ya nini?” She instructs her to answer, “Alele mtoto,” in reference to the viral phrase.
However, the woman innocently gives the question her own interpretation, explaining that she does not have a child to raise and that her bag serves a different purpose.
“Sina mtoto wa kulea, bag ni ya kubeba Biblia,” she responds as she rummages through her bag, seemingly looking for something.
Her earnest response has made the clip even more hilarious, as she appears to take the question literally while the conversation is rooted in the ongoing social media craze.
The “bag ni ya nini?” craze is currently one of Kenya’s most popular social media trends.
It originates from rapper Kapitanis’ viral street anthem *Kitemeo*, where the question “Bag ni ya nini?” is followed by “Alele mtoto.”
The line has since moved beyond the song and into social media, with Kenyans turning it into jokes, memes and music remixes. It has also become a popular slang phrase used in everyday conversations.
Netizens have embraced the trend by posing the question to friends and acquaintances to see whether they know the expected response.
The craze has also found its way into politics, with politicians joining the conversation.
Presidential candidate David Maraga joined the trend on X, posting, “Taita Taveta, Bag ni ya nini?”
Wiper Democratic Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also joined in, writing, “Ati bag ni ya nini? Alele mtoto na Card Basi.”
