Kenyan-American rapper CFO VLIST is carving a unique lane in the hip-hop landscape, blending the raw energy of American rap with the rich, diverse musical identity of his East African roots.
In a recent exclusive interview, the rising star opened up about his artistry, creative process, and what sets his music apart in an increasingly globalized genre.
When asked about his most personal track, he didn't hesitate to highlight Mercy on My Soul. The song, he explains, represents a deep spiritual reflection that resonates with listeners on a profound level. "Mercy on My Soul wins every day."
"It touches the heart and reminds you of days when a relationship between you and God was strong and how far you've fallen." However, he's quick to note that his catalog features versatility, with tracks like "Let's talk ball" offering a high-energy contrast that "commands the crowd and earns applause."
This duality reflects VLIST's complex musical upbringing. Growing up consuming American artists, he fell in love with their beats and rap flows. Yet, he remains deeply connected to his heritage, expressing immense pride in the diversity of Kenyan artists.
"The diversity of Kenyan artists to make different genres of music and keep their identity makes me proud to associate myself with them," he explains, acknowledging how his sound bridges two worlds.
His storytelling approach is uniquely introspective, embracing the complexities of perspective. "I am a thief in someone's story and may be in another's I've been caught but in my story, like a lot of people's stories we are the one's watching it all go up in flames," he reflects, revealing a philosophical depth to his lyricism that sets him apart from mainstream rap contemporaries.
The artist acknowledges the challenges of reaching new audiences, particularly American listeners unfamiliar with his cultural context. "The American listening to me for the first time for sure," he admits. "Kenyans will relate to my struggle, sound and identity but it's hard to get to someone who you feel like you barely know and has lived a totally different life from yours."
Despite these hurdles, VLIST remains focused on the future. "There is a lot more to come. This is only the beginning of a journey for me and my growing fans," he promises. With his unique sound and compelling narrative, CFO VLIST is undoubtedly an artist to watch in 2026 and beyond.
