The stage is set for one of the biggest celebrations in East African music as Tanzania marks 30 years of Bongo Flava, with Kenyan music stars Jua Cali and Nyota Ndogo among the regional artists expected to grace the landmark event.
The anniversary celebrations will take place on July 10 at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam mjini, bringing together pioneers, current chart-toppers and music lovers to honour the genre that has shaped Tanzania's cultural identity and become one of Africa's most influential musical exports.
The event is expected to showcase the evolution of Bongo Flava while highlighting its impact beyond Tanzania's borders.
The inclusion of Kenyan artistes showcases the close musical ties between Kenya and Tanzania, with Jua Cali and Nyota Ndogo having enjoyed successful collaborations and a strong following across East Africa over the years.
Ahead of the celebrations, Tanzania's Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, called on Tanzanians to turn out in large numbers, saying the occasion is about much more than entertainment.
Speaking during preparations for the event, Makonda said July 10 should serve as a day of reflection on Bongo Flava's journey from its humble beginnings in the 1990s to becoming a thriving industry that has produced internationally recognised stars.
"July 10 is fast approaching. Let it remind us where we have come from and the progress we have made," he said.
Posting on her Instagram Nyota ndogo confirmed she will be attending.
"Leo ni tarehe 10 mwezi wa 7,siku ya maadhimisho ya miaka 30 ya Bongo Fleva Nilidhani ni leo lakini mwanangu amenikumbusha kuwa ni Leo.’’
For Jua Cali he has already posted photos already in Tanzania ‘’1st day in DarSalam and it was nothing short of amazing.Leo Milimani city Hall itakua moto" wrote Jua Cali.
Makonda noted that the success of Bongo Flava demonstrates the power of the creative economy, pointing out that many artistes now own businesses, employ young people and have built successful careers through music.
He added that continued investment and support for the arts sector can help reduce unemployment while making a significant contribution to Tanzania's economic development.
The celebration is expected to feature performances from some of Bongo Flava's biggest names, making it a fitting tribute to three decades of music, culture and regional unity.
