Kenyan fashion designer Kate Mayeye Okaranime has made history after becoming the only Kenyan designer chosen to showcase her work at the Amazing Thailand Global Thai Silk Exhibition 2026 in Bangkok.
The exhibition ran from October 11 to 18, 2026, and brought together designers from more than 100 countries.
The Amazing Thailand Global Thai Silk Exhibition was organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand together with the Association of Thai Silk and Culture Promotions.
Its main goal was to show how Thai silk can connect different cultures through modern fashion.
Designers from six regions created special outfits using Thai silk, while adding ideas, colours, fabrics, and traditions from their own countries.
The event was held at Siam Paragon and the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.
It also took place at the same time as Thailand hosted the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.
Kate Mayeye Okaranime is the founder and CEO of African Fabric & Designs Kenya, a Nairobi-based fashion brand started in 2015.
The brand is known for custom African clothing, African prints, beadwork, and designs that mix traditional materials with modern fashion.
She was selected as Kenya’s only representative at the 2026 exhibition. Her participation gave Kenya a place on an international fashion platform and showed how African design can work beautifully with Thai craftsmanship.
For the exhibition, Kate created a special gown called “Ngao ya Umoja,” which means “Shield of Unity.” The dress was designed to celebrate friendship between Kenya and Thailand.
The gown combined luxury Thai silk with hand-woven Maasai print fabric in Kenya’s national colours.
At its centre was a long, hand-beaded Kenyan shield, representing peace, unity, and the protection of culture.
The gown also had a dramatic cape, symbolising Kenya’s welcoming spirit and its role as a protector.
After being displayed at Siam Paragon and the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the gown was reportedly chosen to be kept at the Thai Silk Museum.
This makes the achievement even more important because the dress will remain part of Thailand’s cultural and fashion record.
This was not Kate’s first time representing Kenya in Thailand. In December 2022, with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Thailand, she showed her work at the 3rd Thai Silk Fashion Week in Bangkok.
At that event, she presented a six-piece collection made with at least 70 percent Thai silk, blended with authentic Kenyan materials.
Her work was praised for giving traditional Thai fabric a fresh, bold, and contemporary African look.
Kate’s continued recognition has seemingly propelled the Kenyan fashion scenery on an international stage, through fabric, colour and pattern.
