Avril Lavigne has ended her marriage to Chad Kroeger after two years of marriage, the star confirmed today.

The Complicated hitmaker shared the sad news with a beautiful portrait of the couple, writing in the caption a brief statement about their separation.

"It is with heavy hearts that Chad and I announce our separation today," the Canadian hitmaker wrote.

"Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support."

The 30-year-old married the Nickelback frontman, 40, in July 2013.

Rumours first emerged that the couple were headed for a split a year ago.

A source told Us Weekly at the time: "It's over. He has been going around L.A. telling people that they are divorcing."

Avril's statement comes just a couple of months after the star opened up about her battle with Lyme disease.

The star, who believes she contracted the disease after being bitten by a tick in spring 2014, was left bedridden for five months at her home in Ontario, Canada.

“I literally became bedridden last October,” Avril said as she explained her frustrations about having several misdiagnoses by doctors and health professionals.

She then told Good Morning America in the emotional interview: “This is my second shot at life. I really just want to go out there and truly do what I love. So I'm so excited for life after this.

Chad later claimed he was relieved when Avril, who split from Sum 41 rocker Deryck Whibley in 2010 after four years of marriage, finally confirmed she was secretly battling Lyme disease following months of speculation about their marriage.

Speaking in April, he said: "I'm like, 'OK, the wife has come out and said this, and now I don't have to keep hiding.'"With everyone going 'What's wrong with your wife? What's wrong with your wife?' and me just going, 'Ah, she's gonna be fine.'
