“The Government will pay the medical bill for Mzee Ojwang. We wish him a quick recovery,” reads a tweet on the Deputy President’s official Twitter handle.

This pledge of support comes just a day after Ojwang’s fellow cast members enlisted the help of Sonko Rescue Team to assist the veteran entertainer.

Born Benson Wanjau Karira, the 76 year old thespian is currently admitted at the Loresho Hospital for depression and partial blindness.

According to an article in Nairobian, the pioneer comedian lapsed into depression after they were fired from KBC without notice and without retirement benefits.

Mzee Ojwang’ who resides at Jogoo Road’s Posta flats, got into depression on realising they had no other place to turn to. “He couldn’t talk or eat. He just wanted to be alone. All these complications have been caused by the harsh treatment that KBC gave us when we were fired,” said a source who sort anonymity.

Senator Mike Sonko who agreed to settle the bill told The Nairobian. “It is unfortunate that such entertainers are languishing in poverty.”
