SAMWEL MBURU, an expert in borehole installation tells SILAS NYAMWEYA why he is actively involved in instilling the same skills in the youth free of charge:

How did you acquire the skills for borehole installation?

After high school in 2004, I enrolled in a plumbing institution. However, experience in borehole installation has been my best teacher - I have worked in various companies, mostly Indians, through the years.

I gained trust from different clients and organisations who mostly recommended my work to potential customers. The encouragement from my first client who was so much after I completed work for him, it played a big part in motivating me to start my own venture.

Who are your clients and how do you reach them?

My major clients are property developers for who we provide quality services (boreholes) in their projects. I also deal with individual homeowners who need boreholes in their houses.

Most of our clients reach us through referrals as well as through social media.

How do you ensure that the water in every borehole you install is safe for consumption?

The first step in making borehole water safe for drinking is to test the water to determine the levels of impurities and contaminants. This can be done by taking a water sample to a laboratory for analysis. The most common impurities found in borehole water include bacteria, viruses, parasites, and heavy metals.

What are your charges for borehole installation services?

The cost depends on the location. Exact charges can be got after an assessment which takes a few days, but range from Sh1.2 million to Sh3 million depending on the depth.

You have been involved in empowering youth in your area, please tell us your motivation.

Well, I have been sharing my knowledge with the youth in my area as a way of giving back to society. A number of young people have really benefited from my programme as many get employment in plumbing companies. I consider this a significant achievement in my life and career.

In your view, why do you think borehole water is better than other water sources?

Borehole represents an uninterrupted supply of clean, fresh water for drinking, washing, and all other household needs.
