The Nairobi County Government has banned all ECDE graduation ceremonies in Nairobi public schools.

Through Education and sports County Executive (CEC) Janet Ouko, the county noted that schools planning ECDE graduation ceremonies were overcharging parents.

Ouko further noted that this was against the spirit of free ECDE especially if they force parents to dig deeper into their pockets.

“We have noted with concern that schools are planning ECDE graduation ceremonies and charging parents between Ksh1000 and Ksh1500.

“This is against the spirit of free ECDE which is being implemented by H.E. the Governor of Nairobi County.

“This is, therefore, to communicate a ban on all ECDE ceremonies especially if they attract a charge to parents,” read the letter.

This news was gladly received by netizens who lamented the costs they incurred in paying for such ceremonies.

Here are some of the reactions:

The kind of money-making schemes going on in schools nowadays....!!!! And when you raise the matter with the administration, you are bluntly given the option to transfer your child(ren). To me, that equates to psychological and emotional abuse of parents. Let there be regulations— Mercy L. Ng'endo (@Mercy_Ngendo) October 9, 2018
