The Kenya National Examinations Council has raised registration fees for secondary and primary school national examinations.

On Monday, KNEC Chief Executive Paul Wasanga said this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates would pay Sh500 while those taking the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) would pay a basic charge of Sh2,000 up from Sh1,000.

Form Four candidates will now pay between Sh4,500 and Sh4,800 depending on the number of subjects taken.

Earlier, KCPE candidates used to pay Sh300 for registration.

Mr Wasanga said the fee for late registration has also been raised from Sh750 to Sh1,000 for the KCSE.

The council has also increased fees for late KCPE registration.

Last year, the council charged Sh150 more for late registration.

Candidates seeking to be transferred from one examination centre to another will pay Sh300 more.

Wasanga said the council has not reviewed examination registration fees for the last ten years, adding the hard economic times have forced them to effect the changes.

"The council has not reviewed examination registration payments for the last ten years despite the increasing cost of running the examinations," Wasanga told The Standard on Monday.

He asked head teachers to advise candidates and their parents on the raised charges.

The council secretary also said this year, examiners would be paid according to papers marked.

In the past, examination invigilators and markers have complained over poor pay.

At the same time, Wasanga said marking last year’s KCSE has been completed and they were compiling the results.

He said the results would be released next month.
