Residents of six districts in Rift Valley Province need of food urgently.

Rift Valley PC Hassan Noor Hassan said despite continued Government assistance to people in the districts, more was needed to keep children in school and help residents survive the drought.

The affected districts include Turkana South, North and Central, and three others in Baringo.

"No one is dying of hunger in the region, but we need to step up supplies in arid and semi-arid areas," he said in Nakuru yesterday.

The PC said there were other areas where people were experiencing hunger but the provincial administration was managing the situation.

Hassan denied claims that locals ate wild fruits and said families seen eating them on TV were enjoying their traditional food.

"Just because people eat traditional food does not mean they are dying of hunger. Every community has meals they turn to in dry seasons," he told journalists at his office.

He, however, said the Government has supplied enough food to areas experiencing famine. "We have an up to date food situation assessment data and all DCs in arid and semi-arid areas have sufficient rations," said the administrator.

He urged organisations willing to donate food to seek advice from DCs.
