Double World record holder Faith Kipyegon has challenged the government to support upcoming athletes by constructing more stadia with functional running tracks.
Kipyegon made the remarks shortly after President William Ruto awarded her for breaking two world records in one week.
According to the 5000M champion, building more stadia in the country is the only way the government and sports authorities can motivate young and upcoming athletes.
"We need more stadia with proper running tracks to help upcoming athletes train with ease. I would like to urge the government to set up more training areas to motivate young athletes and help grow their talents," said Kipyegon.
While receiving her award at Nairobi's State House, Kipyegon was elated after she became the first athlete to be celebrated at home after breaking the world record in athletics.
The athlete was awarded Sh5 million in cash and a three-bedroomed house worth Sh6 million in Park Road, a gesture that left her emotional.
"I am so happy, now I can own a house in Nairobi and buy my father a car. I promised to buy him a car when I break a world record," she said amid tears.
"I lack words; I did not expect to be the first athlete to be celebrated. I really want to thank the president for this gesture."
On June 2, the mother of one broke the women's 1500m record at the third Diamond League meeting, clocking 3:49.11.
On June 9, she made more history by breaking the women's 5000m races after clocking 14:05:20.
"I can't talk of doubling both the 1500m and 5000m in my next competition. We will discuss with my manager and decide the way forward," Kipyegon told KTN News on Tuesday, June 13.
