He may have missed out on any major awards, but Kenyan captain Victor Wanyama was still instrumental in helping Southampton qualify for next year’s Europa League.

The saints will finish in fifth place if Manchester United lose their final game of the season against AFC Bournemouth today.

With 63 points on the log, this is the highest number of points the Saints have ever collected in a season as they ended the season on a high by thrashing Crystal Palace 4-1.

In total, the Kenyan captain played 35 times for the Saints this season scoring once in all competitions.

He featured 30 times in Premier League matches, three times in the Europa Cup and twice in the Capital One Cup. His only goal of the season was during a 3-1 win over Newcastle on September 9 at home. But concern has been raised over Wanyama’s tendency to pick cautions.

In total, he picked six yellow cards and three red cards, which saw him get suspended for five matches at some point. He picked yellow cards against Watford, Swansea, Bournemouth, Norwich and twice against Leicester City.

On February 6, he earned his first straight red card following a dangerous challenge on midfielder Dimitri Payet and a five match suspension from the English FA.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic was highly critical of the Kenyan after the challenge and he told the Guardian. “When I saw it in real time it looked like a red card. I don’t say that because I am the manager-it is a red card. For me there is no place for football for those kind of tackles and they should be punished.”
