Anti-Female Genital Mutilation Board Chairperson Linah Chebii Kilimo has urged Samburu elders to join in the fight against tradition.

Ms Kilimo's call comes weeks after the elders' recent public vow to continue with the practice.

Kilimo (above), who was speaking at Maralal in Samburu County during the marking of International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, said the elders are supposed to address the negative impacts of the practice and set an example rather than protecting the outdated culture.

She called on the elders to join morans who recently announced that they will not marry circumcised girls in a bid to end the vice.

"Elders should join hands with morans who have recently declared they no longer want to be associated with the retrogressive practice," she said.
