NAIROBI, KENYA: Kariobangi North Girls High School has benefitted from a book donation from the Desai Memorial Foundation in conjunction with Global Peace Foundation – Kenya.
The offer was facilitated through the Character and Creativity Initiative (CCI), a programme that builds integrity and creativity in high school.
Suli Shah, a trustee of the Desai Library Foundation, presented the books worth Sh600,000 to the schools’ Library.
Dr Manu Chandaria gave an additional Sh1 million donation to help complete the school’s classrooms and officially unveiled the offerings to the schools’ library.
The principal of the school said one of classes had been converted to a temporary library and appealed to other sponsors to come forward in helping upgrade the school’s facilities.
“We still don’t have a library, but it is worth noting that our first donation to the school originated from the Desai Library Foundation,” Mrs Rhodah Ogaro explained.
The foundation was established in 1929 in memory of Manilal Ambalal Desai to continue with his great humanitarian work. Currently, the foundation offers scholarships to children from needy families and provides books to schools to improve their learning processes.
Dr Chandaria termed schools as incubators to build successful leaders and entrepreneurs.
In Kenyatta University, Dr Manu Chandaria has already initiated an ongoing innovation centre — LEAP Hub — that helps to nurture entrepreneurs through mentorship.
A LEAP Hub, a program of Global Peace Foundation, is a dedicated space within high schools where students can launch their own business or start a social enterprise. The Hub is a public-private sector partnership that supports creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation. –
The hub incubates and nurtures ideas and plans for execution.
“We want to grow job creators rather than job seekers after school life,” said Suli Mukesh Desai, one of the donors. The donation of the books took place at the school in the presence of the school’s board of management led by the Chairman Dickson Owuor, teachers and students.
