A passenger has been charged with assaulting and inappropriately touching a female traffic police officer attached to Makongeni Police Station in Nairobi.

Philip Petroba Okoyo is alleged to have committed the offences along Jogoo Road in Nairobi on March 17.

According to the charge sheet, Okoyo was in a matatu headed to town from Umoja estate at around 8am when the female cop stopped it. Annoyed, he alighted from the matatu before proceeding to abuse the officer, claiming she was corrupt and had just stopped the matatu to solicit for a Sh100 bribe.

It is alleged that he then touched the officer on the chest before raining kicks and blows on her as the public watched helplessly.

Fellow police officers, who were on patrol, rescued her and arrested Okoyo but he resisted.

He was eventually overpowered but as he was being escorted to the police station, another passenger, Michael Akuno Odhiambo, joined the fray and obstructed the police from taking him in.

Odhiambo is alleged to have managed to disentangle Okoyo from the police officers, but the officers got reinforcement and arrested them. They were later taken to court and charged.

They denied the charges. The matter will be mentioned on April 4.
