Migori: Teargas, running battles as supporters of two MP candidates clash

Tension was high in Migori town as supporters of Suna West MP Peter Masara and Former Suna West MP Joseph Ndiege clashed.

This is after supporters of Masara began celebrating what they were convinced was an early lead in the race to serve the residents as the next MP.

What started as celebrations turned chaotic when Ndiege's supporters who were unhappy with the outcome confronted Masara's supporters.

The supporters who had gathered in opposite directions at first tried scaring off each other with insults.

Verbal words would then turn into a stone-throwing match as the supporters clashed.

According to Suna West Sub County Police commander Elizabeth Walukoba, the supporters had blocked the road before they started throwing stones at each other.

The incident went on for half an hour before police could intervene and calm the situation.

Walukoba linked chaos to political intolerance. "We have restored traffic to normalcy. They had blocked the road," she said.

Police said they had not received any cases of an injured person.

In Uriri sub-county, there was commotion which resulted to a 25-year-old man being hit with a club on the head.

According to Migori County Commander Mark Wanjala, the injured person was rushed to Migori hospital where he died.

Wanjala said ten other people were arrested in Nyatike Sub-county after they were found blocking people from voting yesterday.
