Education CS Fred Matiang’i’s former primary school in Nyamira received a consignment of facemasks for teachers and learners from an American gaming giant.

Class Eight and Form Four learners at Manga Primary School who are continuing with their studies on Friday benefited after receiving a consignment of face masks from Ameristar Casino and Spa whose worth could not be immediately established.

The goodies were delivered by Mellen Mboga, an alumnus of the school who lives in the US.

This is the third time the school, which is near Matiang’i’s home in Borabu sub-county, is receiving a similar support from the company that is based in Colarodo.

Last year, the company also issued loads of sanitary towels to more than 300 girls in the primary school.

At around the same time, the company installed a security alarm and a series of electric bells in all the classrooms besides installing a 10,000 liters water tank which the school uses to harvest clean rain water.

The school’s deputy head teacher Anne Omoro said majority of the students who were helped with the masks are drawn from disadvantaged backgrounds and affording the protective equipment is difficult.

“It is a pity that most of our learners wear a single mask for more than a week consecutively without even washing them; not because of anything but because their parents cannot afford them,” Ms Omoro said.

According to a message from the President of Penn National Gaming, a parent company of Ameristar Jay Snowden, the school will be considered for more support in future.
