The health sector in Homa Bay County has received a major boost with the establishment of two medical facilities worth Sh91.8 million.
The county has opened an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) worth Sh55.8 million and a satellite blood bank valued at Sh36 million at the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital. Governor Cyprian Awiti said the facilities are now in operation after they were launched by Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman last week.
The ICU has 18 beds with five functions, 10 ventilators, 10 cardiac monitors and other equipment. It will be used to treat patients in critical conditions.
“Aman said our ICU is one of the best in Kenya. We want to ensure Homa Bay people get high-quality healthcare,” said Awiti.
The county has also established a blood bank with a capacity of 600 pints and various storage equipment.
“Blood is a very crucial component in administering health. Our blood bank will reduce shortage of blood in our health facilities,” the governor said.
He said Homa Bay has now attained the full level of preparedness to handle Covid-19 patients.
The county has recorded 62 cases of Covid-19 infections. Among the 24 who are currently isolated, 18 are at Homa Bay prison while the rest are undergoing home-based care.
The county has also set up nine isolation centres in various sub-counties to augment the fight against the pandemic.
