Kenya marked its 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations with a historic announcement from President William Ruto, who formally approved the renaming of Talanta Stadium to Raila Amolo Odinga Stadium in honour of the late former Prime Minister.

The declaration, made at the packed Nyayo National Stadium, drew loud cheers as thousands of Kenyans joined in celebrating the country's independence and remembering one of its most influential political figures.

The moment unfolded after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja proposed that the newly built Talanta Stadium one of the country's flagship sports infrastructure projects be named after Raila Odinga in recognition of his decades of contribution to Kenya's democratic journey.

As the President addressed the nation, he paused and turned to the crowd, asking: "Munajua kazi kubwa iliofanyika pale. Na nimeskia yale Governor wa Nairobi amesema... ule uwanja wa Talanta lipatiwe jina gani?" In an electrifying show of unity, the crowd responded in unison: "Raila Amollo Odinga!"

Smiling, President Ruto affirmed their wish: "Nime waskiza, na tukikamilisha tuta fanya hivo."

His endorsement signalled a significant national gesture of respect toward Raila Odinga.

This year's Jamhuri Day commemorated every December 12 to mark Kenya's establishment as a republic in 1964 was emotionally charged and deeply symbolic.

The President led the nation in a solemn moment of silence to honour the late Raila, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping Kenya's political landscape and advancing democratic freedoms.

The celebrations also featured an impressive military parade led by the Kenya Defence Forces' 20th Parachute Battalion, a tradition that showcases discipline, national pride, and unity.

With the theme centered on tourism, wildlife conservation, and the growing MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector, the event also highlighted Kenya's economic priorities and its commitment to positioning itself as a global destination.
