A dramatic CCTV clip capturing a fiery altercation between a civilian and a police officer at a petrol station has taken the internet by storm.

In the undated footage, filmed during the night at an undisclosed location, a man can be seen refuelling his car when tensions suddenly escalate between him and an armed police officer.

Their exchange grows increasingly heated, hands flailing in the air, with another man stepping in, seemingly trying to defuse the situation before it spirals out of control.

However, the officer, clearly agitated, waves his arms animatedly before stepping forward and attempting to slap the civilian across the face.

The slap becomes the turning point, and in an instant, the man abandons the fuel pump, squares up like a trained fighter, and unleashes a barrage of punches.

In what can only be described as a flurry of expertly timed blows, the man lands left-right combinations with precision and force.

The officer, caught completely off guard, is sent crashing to the ground. His rifle is flung several metres away during the scuffle as he tries, unsuccessfully, to subdue the enraged civilian.

Wild chaos intensified as three fellow officers rushed to the scene in a bid to rescue their colleague, who was seen desperately clutching the shirt of his attacker while lying flat on the tarmac.

Moments later, a police Land Rover pulls up, its back doors flung open as more than five uniformed officers quickly restrain the man. He is forcefully bundled into the vehicle, leaving bystanders and people in the vehicle that was fuelling stunned.

The footage has since gone viral, sparking widespread debate online over the conduct of both the officer and the civilian and reigniting conversations around police brutality, public discipline, and self-defence.

@jessykigen wrote, "We should never lay hands on police but they should lay on us... it's a very damn! Societal norm. Police are trained to protect and not provoke civilians. I stand with the civilian on this altercation; those combos were top notch."

@Pesa_ber noted, "Hata kama "umechoka" aje, never lay hands on a police officer!"

@Analokarani posted, "Atajua hajui.. fala Sana, you don't do that to a police officer. Majuto."

@Bilharzi_ stated, "From the look of things, those cops had gone to particularly arrest that jamaa. It's clear the karao wasn't bothered with anyone else there. So there's resisting arrest. Assaulting an officer. That guy is in trouble sana."
