Make business courses practical, State now told

The government should introduce practical entrepreneurship education as a long term strategy to encourage entrepreneurship, a 24 member multi-sectoral committee made up of private sector and civil society players has recommended.

The committee said this will help manage the high youth unemployment, which stands at 60 per cent.

Nahashon Gulali, the Africa Youth Trust executive director, said countries such as South Korea, Singapore and Portugal that have produced entrepreneurs have developed curriculums that encourage children to embrace entrepreneurship and prepare graduates to venture into business, unlike the Kenyan curriculum that prepares graduates for employment.

 ‘‘We must integrate practical non-academic entrepreneurship in the school system right from primary to college level as a long term solution to youth unemployment in Kenya’’ he said.

He said there are negative attitudes towards the informal sector that calls for a practical approach in the education system.
