A businessman who sold a stolen Range Rover to Local Government Minister Fred Gumo has been arraigned in court.

Hassan Abdalla Yusuf appeared before Magistrate Lucy Nyambura for stealing the car from Cooper Motors Corporation (CMC) workshop in Industrial area in 2008 where it had been taken for repairs after an accident along Nairobi-Naivasha highway.

The charge sheet stated that in November 2008, at CMC along Lusaka Road, Yusuf stole an un-registered motor vehicle chasis Number 33A295160, Engine Number 00190608B 14291 Range Rover green in colour valued at Sh18 million property of CMC.

The second charge stated that on April 12, last year, at Muthaiga Estate, he dishonestly handled the un-registered Range Rover property of CMC knowing that it had been stolen.

The accused denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000.

Prosecution has lined 10 witnesses to testify against the accused.

The vehicle which was stolen four years ago was recovered last Friday, when aides of Regional Development and acting Local Government minister Fred Gumo presented it at CMC for service.

Gumo recorded a statement with Criminal Investigations Department headquarters on Saturday.

The minister explained that a Mombasa businessman was selling it to him but he had not received all the documents. The case will be heard on Ocober16.
