Scholars have expressed concern about the declining number of students opting for agriculture and water studies.
Speaking during the African Professionals' Initiative in Water, Energy, Environment and Climate Change regional conference at Pwani University on Friday, the university's Vice Chancellor, Mohamed Rajab, said no students applied for the two subjects at Pwani this year.
“In 2022 we will not have any graduates in agriculture and water related fields,"said Prof Rajab. Irrigation Principal Secretary Fred Segor and his Agriculture counterpart Hamadi Boga called on youths to embrace agriculture.
“Technologies have been developed to make agriculture easy and manageable," said Prof Segor.
Prof Boga said the ministry would meet with universities to discuss how to encourage youths to study agriculture.
