One year a long time ago, it did not rain.  Everything dried up and people and animals started starving to death.

The situation was very bad in Savanna land, where many animals lived. They started to move to other areas in search of food and water.

Even the mighty King Lion was in a deep predicament. He was growing feeble and feeble each passing day. Seeing that he was staring death in the face, he entered into an alliance with the hyena.

The two agreed to hunt down the weaker animals that were on the verge of death. They set out one early morning before the sun got hot. By midday, they were tired and worn out. However, towards evening, as they were going home, they spotted a gazelle.

The gazelle, sensing danger, broke into a run but the two friends gave chase. Soon, the gazelle slackened his pace and the two pounced on him.

“Let us divide him into parts first,” the lion said as Hyena was intent on devouring the carcass. They divided the gazelle into two parts.

“Wait!” roared the lion as the hyena made to eat again.

“As the king of beasts, the first part belongs to me. The second part belongs to me too on account of the chase we gave together,” he said.

“What about me?” cried Hyena. “You?” asked Lion, “When I give a roar, run away.”

Then lion gave a mighty roar that made the hyena run for his dear life.  He waited at a distance till the lion had eaten then came for the leftovers.

Today, he still follows the lion hoping to get his equal share back.
