Meru Governor Peter Munya has threatened to quit Kiraitu Murungi’s Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) following a budget row with the local county assembly.

Speaking in Kimeru, an angry Munya claimed MCAs from the APK party were behind his woes in the county. Munya and Senator Kiraitu have in the past differed on whether APK should join Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP).

While Kiraitu favours the merger, Munya has openly opposed such a move He has even threatened to walk out of APK and form his own party should APK join JAP.

“I am APK Secretary General and party members should stand with me whenever there are disagreements with the assembly. It is strange that the complete opposite is what usually happens in our case.”

Munya alleged mischief in the reduction of the recurrent budget by the MCAs, who are pushing for allocation of funds to the proposed Ward Development Fund. “When you see a tortoise on top of a tree, it is clear it did not get there alone,” said Munya in Kimeru, referring to the possibility that MCAs’ had the blessing of the party’s top command.

Munya said he was ready to quit the party and shop around for another party should the MCAs continue to hold his administration at ransom.

He said county operations had stalled after the assembly delayed approval of budget.
