Kenyan Premier League (KPL) has said its constitution does not provide for an 18-team league.
A statement from the KPL comes a day after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced its proposal for an 18-team league from the 2015 season.
The KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda said yesterday, its governors have to change the constitution before an 18-team league is adopted.
“Our constitution states that the KPL will not have more than 16 teams. That is the law. For it to be changed, we have to call a governing council meeting to change the constitution,” said Oguda, who also revealed they are yet to be furnished with the proposal from FKF.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chairman Sam Nyamweya, on the other hand, said he has convened a meeting with all stakeholders tomorrow (Thursday) to deliberate on the proposal.
“We have called the KPL and all our sponsors to discuss this proposal. We want to get the input of all those involved before we implement it,” he said.
Apart from discussing the need to have an expanded league, Thursday’s meeting will also deliberate on the need to change the calendar.
FKF has proposed to change the local calendar to be in line with the European calendar where the league starts in August and ends in May.
On Monday, FKF sent a statement to newsrooms proposing how the 18 team KPL will work. In the proposal, Nairobi City Stars will not be relegated despite finishing among the two lower teams in the just concluded season.
The statement said: “Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has noted with pride the growth of our top league which is now rated as among the best on the continent. However following years of turmoil in our football our federation inherited the 16-league format from the former FKL.
“Our mission is to rekindle the spirit of Kenyan fans hence the need to have a bigger representation in our top league.
“In this regard, the 2015/16 KPL season will now have an enlarged 18 team league.”
The statement continues:”The number 16 team in the KPL Nakuru All Stars will be automatically relegated to the lower league while the Number 15 team Nairobi City Stars FC will remain in the league.
“The two automatic winners of the FKF National Super league Zone A and B namely Shabana and Rangers FC will be automatically be promoted.
“The two first runners up in the FKF National Super League Zone A and B namely Kakamega Homeboyz and Nakumatt will square it off in one match and the winner takes the third qualifying slot.
“The playoff match between Kakamega Homeboyz and Nakumatt will be played at the Afraha Stadium on November 22.”
