Preparations to bury the late musician John Ng’ang’a aka De’Mathew have been finalised. Yesterday, youth in Mukurwe village prepared the grave for his burial.
The funeral committee chairman Francis Muheria said all is set for the burial of De’Mathew today.
“We have been coordinating activities to give our son a deserving send-off to honour his memory,” said Muheria.
Government officials led by Murang’a County Commissioner Mohammed Barre and Gatanga MP Joseph Ngugi visited Githambia Primary School where the funeral service will be conducted. President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to attend the burial of the musician.
De’Mathew died on Sunday night when his vehicle rammed into a stationary trailer near Blue Post Hotel along the Thika-Nairobi highway.
Before he met his death last Sunday, the musician had attended a funds drive at Metro Fill in Thika Town in aid of the daughter of Peter Kigia wa Esther, another musician, to enable her travel to India for treatment.
Last night, hundreds of fans gathered at Golden Green Palm Hotel at Kenol to celebrate the life of De’Mathew.
On Thursday night, De’Mathew’s songs were played at Maka Villa Resort Club in Murang’a town, where he frequented.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and County Assembly Speaker Nduati Kariuki described the late De’Mathew as a pillar who brought together musicians from all parts of the country.
Wa Iria said the musician helped register Talented Musicians Sacco after the death of Joseph Kamaru wa Wanjiru in November last year.
The Sacco bought a parcel of land worth Sh10 million in March for real estate investment.
Nduati said De’Mathew used music to express social and political issues. “He used his songs to warn the youth of the dangers of alcoholism, among other social ills,” he said.
