Prophet Victor Kanyari’s mother, Prophetess Lucy Nduta, was jailed for two years after being found guilty of offering fake HIV cure through miracle prayers at her church at the Kenya Railways godowns in Nairobi.
A patient was first required to pay Sh1, 000 registration fee for the special prayers. Those who were unregistered got general prayers kama watu wengine kanisani (like other church-goers).
The victims also had to be tested in her clinic at Afya Centre in Nairobi, where they were accompanied by a church elder who received the results which were then taken to the self-styled prophetess.
If a patient had ‘planted a seed,’ the prophetess gave them a clean bill of health. Most did not seek further treatment or second opinion.
But those who decided to go for further testing realised that their status had not changed.
The police later found out that the clinics were her own creation to lure people and she was subsequently arrested in 2006 and charged with six counts of fraud.
She was found guilty in 2008 and sentenced to two years in prison. She was released in 2010.
