A Form One student at Poiywek Secondary School in Ainamoi Constituency was crashed to death by his school bus.

Kericho Traffic Base Commander, Michael Kahare, said the accident occurred when 15-year-old Bernard Kipkurui jumped from the bus’ carrier and was run over by the vehicle’s rear wheels.

The bus came to a stop after smashing a wall in one of the classrooms at the school.

Mr Kahare said the bus driver had parked the vehicle on a slope at the school compound and left to attend to errands when the vehcile’s handbrake failed and the vehicle reversed.

Kipkurui was one of eight students at the bus’ rooftop carrier packing music equipment in readiness for competition at Kericho Day Secondary School. “The deceased was the last to jump off the bus carrier as it gained momentum down the slope. His colleagues sustained injuries from the fall and were rushed to Kericho Nursing home,” said Kahare.

He added: “We are yet to arrest the driver, who is a parastatal employee. We are also considering the fact that he was not driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.”

In another road incident that occurred at Kapkelek along Kericho-Sotik Road, a boda boda operator and his 10-year-old passenger were run over by a lorry as they avoided a head-on collision with a vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
