The fifth Season of Africa’s hottest series Shuga is back. Dubbed Shuga Down South, it is shot and based on South Africa’s party culture as it addresses HIV &AIDS issues among the young people and African families. The series launch happened yesterday at the il Grande Monte Casino in South Africa.

Kenyan TV star Nick Mutuma who has so far appeared in all the seasons of the series has been in South Africa for the shoot was also in attendance together with Victoria Kimani whose music is featured in the series.

Nick, who plays Leo, has been the longest standing actor on the show so far. Other big names that made the cut as cast members include Kwesta, Seyi Shay, Tanzania pop star Vanessa Mdee who plays , and Nigeria’s Emmanuel Ifeanyi.

The series took the South Africa route because according to a UNAIDS 2015 report, HIV prevalence is up to 8 times higher among adolescent girls of 15-19 years than among adolescent males in South Africa. MTV Shuga Down South is set to premiere across Africa on MTV Base on the 8th of March together with other local stations in collaboration with MTV Base.
