A funeral is supposed to be an occasion where the departed is eulogised and the living celebrate his life. But this was not the case during the burial of Garissa terror attack victim Simon Mwangi in Nyeri yesterday.

His grandfather had denied mourners access to Mwangi’s final resting place and no amount of persuasion could make the senior citizen budge. He said Mwangi’s mother, his daughter, could only buy his forgiveness for Sh1.8 million.

When all seemed lost, Mwangi’s mother, Mary Nyawira ran to her mother’s grave and wept bitterly. Mwangi was later buried next to his house without his grandfather’s approval.
